Do you remember the joy of play? Did you spend hours upon hours pretending to be a pirate or a princess? Did you make mud pie creations worthy of a four star restaurant? Did you pretend to be on a safari as you climbed the trees in your back yard?

In today’s technological world, the pull of electronic play time is very strong.  From a young age, kids learn how to interact with technology.  Technology is a good thing, but it can often be a strong pull away from outdoor and creative  play.

Shannon Guernsey joined Mom of Many Hats Radio to share her site, Planet FassaPlanet Fassa is an interactive site that encourages creativity, imagination and outdoor play.  Through a series of online books, kids will learn technology skills, but also be encouraged to bond with the characters, hone their reading skills, and get out into the world and play!
Shannon and the Mom of Many Hats discussed the impact of play for kids and families.  Among the very important and relevant ideas about why it is necessary, were a few some key points that we all need to remember when it comes to allowing free play for those young ones that we have a responsibility to:world and play! At Planet Fassa, families will find 6 interactive books with a great cast of characters, and prompts for hours of activities, as well as a points system to encourage kids to participate in imaginative, creative, and offline play.

  • Play is a basic right for children and necessary to a child’s development.
  • Play and imagination hone problem solving skills and forward thinking.
  • As parents, caretakers, and teachers, we need to empower kids to be creative, play, and understand who they are.
  • Families, teachers, and caretakers create the extended “village” that creates opportunities for kids to use their imagination.

Third Friday Creativity Hat! Ann Skydell Harmon of Ann-Made 9/23

Click the image to visit Ann-Made !

I was first introduced to  Ann Skydell Harmon of Ann-Made through an article in First Magazine article (June 6, 2011 issue) that featured her and her company.  I knew then that I just had to have her on the Mom of Many Hats Radio Show. I was blessed to have the opportunity to speak with Ann on today’s show and we had a wonderful time.  My impression of her was confirmed. Ann embodies what it is to be a mom of many hats.  Her outlook is exactly what the Mom of Many Hats Radio Show strives to illuminate – that as women and moms, we have many roles and experiences and they are all valuable.

Ann shared with us the story of how her company Ann-Made was born out of her work with special needs and at risk kids. Her goal as an art teacher was to teach them to use creativity to think through life’s everyday problems.  Through art and creative problem solving, she wanted to give them a different lens to see life’s issues through. In a classroom project, she found the creative outlet and product that brought her to where she is now – a socially and environmentally responsible business owner. She utilized creative strategies to create her company, and provides those that help her a creative outlet to better themselves.

Besides being a company that does good and responsible works, Ann-Made pieces are unique, beautiful, and made with quality in mind.  Ann uses her creativity and her graphic arts experience to create designs that are eye catching and different than anything you will see. The pieces are produced by a group of women that benefit from the employment opportunity, with materials that are obtained responsibly.  From production to the sale of her jewelry, the positive ripple effect is a wonderful contribution to the world.

How do you define creativity? We looked at wearing our creativity hat with Sarah Whitenhafer.

As moms, we engage in so many activities that are creative, but we don’t always realize how valuable our creativity is.  Our creativity is an expression of ourselves.  It is also a lesson to our children about how to express who they are through creating something outside of themselves.

Creativity comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  It could be music, art, dance – anything that allows an outlet of expression that is different that the common spoken word.  Sarah shared her creative journey with the written word as she took us through the process of writing her novel, Tamed .  We talked about what creativity is, what impact it as on us as moms. and the impact it has on our families. Sarah shared with us what blessings the process of being creative brought to her family, her faith, and her self.
